Synopsis: Through the use of her half-brother’s magic insects, a teenage girl seeks to bring her birth mother back from the dead.
My goal in this excerpt is to demonstrate how I can introduce the main characters and illustrate their relationship at the beginning of the story. This excerpt ends just after the inciting incident.
The House of Last Chances
An excerpt from a 40-minute animated film, completed as part of the MSt in Creative Writing course at the University of Oxford.
Synopsis: Harvey Knight, a recently divorced failing writer enters a contest to survive a weekend in a haunted house in order to retain custody of his two children.
This excerpt is from the beginning of the film; my goal was to introduce the protagonist and make clear where the character is at the beginning of the story, how he needs to grow, and the goal(s) he needs to reach by the end of the film. I also aimed to establish that the story takes place in a fantasical world through the early introduction of the Inspectre, a supernatural character, a shepherd for the dead.
